Discover the wild heart of the Romanian Carpathians on an unforgettable journey through the Făgăraș Mountains, often referred to as the Transylvanian Alps. This expedition follows the spectacular alpine section of the ridge, crossing dramatic peaks, glacial lakes, exposed ridgelines and remote mountain landscapes. Along the way, you’ll summit some of Romania’s highest mountains, including Moldoveanu Peak (2,544m), and spend each night camping in breathtaking high-altitude locations. Designed for experienced hikers, this is one of the finest backpacking adventures in Eastern Europe.

Trip Schedule

Day 1 – Reach the Ridge

Start from Sebeșu and climb towards the main Făgăraș Ridge. Camp near Scara Refuge after a rewarding ascent.

Distance: ~20 km
Elevation: +1,800 m


Day 2 – Negoiu Peak

Cross the spectacular Custura Sărății ridge and summit Negoiu Peak (2,535m), Romania’s second-highest mountain. Camp near Călțun Lake.

Distance: ~7 km


Day 3 – Transfăgărășan Crossing

Follow the high ridge across several peaks and pass above the famous Transfăgărășan Road before camping near Fereastra Zmeilor.

Distance: ~9 km


Day 4 – Moldoveanu Summit

Reach Viștea Mare and Moldoveanu Peak (2,544m), the highest point in Romania, before spending the night in a spectacular alpine setting.

Distance: ~10 km


Day 5 – Final Traverse & Descent

Cross the final high section of the ridge, including Dara and Hârtopu Darei peaks, before descending to Breaza where the expedition concludes.

Distance: ~20 km
